502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment originated in July 1941, as an experimental unit formed to test the doctrine and tactics of Parachute Assault. On 2 March 1942, the unit was re-designated as the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. The
502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division distinguished itself with conspicuous gallantry and valor during combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The
Strike Force battalion fought hard to secure the cities of An Najaf, Karbala, southern Baghdad, and Mosul.
